A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee out of their home country because of persecution, war or violence.

What is the difference between a refugee and a migrant?

Refugees are forced to leave their home country due to a significant risk of danger whether they are being persecuted for their race, religion or other contributing factors. while migrants may move for number of reasons such as family reunification or economic reasons.

Why do refugees choose to seek refuge Malaysia?

There are several reasons why refugees choose Malaysia:

  • Malaysia has economic and political stability which has encouraged refugees to seek asylum in Malaysia.

  • Malaysia is a majority Muslim country, the majority of refugees in Malaysia are Rohingya refugees from Malaysia and are also Muslim.

  • Many refugee already have family members who are living in Malaysia.

Why should Malaysia protect refugees?

According to international laws, all countries are obligated to the principle of non-refoulement which is respected those in need of international protection by not forcibly returned the refugee to a situation of risk.

What is non-refoulement?

Non-refoulement is a fundamental principle of international law that forbids a country receiving asylum seekers from returning them to a country in which they would be in likely danger of persecution based on "race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion".

How many refugees are there in Malaysia?

Currently there are 179,550 refugees and asylum seekers registered with UNHCR Malaysia (June 2021).

Can a refugee study in Malaysia?

Yes, but only via an informal parallel system of 128 community-based learning centers available in Malaysia.

How can I help refugees in Malaysia?

There are several ways to help:

  • Volunteering through NGOs activities

  • Donations

  • Increasing awareness of the plight of refugees through social media, word of mouth or anyway you can!

Who is Cahaya Surya Bakti?

Cahaya Surya Bakti (CSB) is a registered Malaysian Society. It was founded with the vision of providing community-based support and assistance for the refugee population in the state of Johor, Malaysia.

Who is JOCC?

JOCC is a project managed by CSB, in partnership with UNHCR. The JOCC project is funded by Logistics Corporation, Agility.

How is CSB is related to UNHCR?

CSB is one of several Implementing Partner Organisations of UNHCR in Malaysia.
